A Curious Carving! in Girona

From the Museum of Archeology in the Cloisters of a Church in Girona

My sister and I were struck by the flourishing carvings in this beautiful Romanesque cloister, formerly a part of a magnificent Cathedral. And in particular this one of the 2 tailed Sirena/ mermaid.
This museum is a must in Girona, with very carefully selected items from centuries BC. We asked one of the historians there about this image, and this was his response:

1. Romanesque time was one of celebrating abundance, nature and well being and the artist got a little carried away

2. Purely functional representation of La Sirena to be fitted on a cornered capitol so you just have to split the tail to be symmetric.

3. An expression of the birthing, wide open female energy (probably in contra to church edicts of the time)

I go for 3!!!

Girona has a very beautiful old quarter, a little over full of tourists exploring sites that were used in filming Game of Thrones but plenty of quieter corners like this museum to sit and marvel at the wisdom and creativity of the ancients.
